Notes 10/12- Machiavelli

• Machiavelli is living in the turn of the 15th into the 16th century
• He was based in Florence all his life.
• His career is at the beginning of what we now call political science
• Wrote "The Prince" in 1513, but it was not published until after his death
• It was mostly only known between his friends while he was alive but became more used after his death.
• His father was a lawyer
•  At this time Florence is being fought over between the powerful families, including the Medici's 
• There were also a lot of outside pressures from France and the Holy Roman Empire, and Spain. 
• He was brought up well educated as  nobleman 
• He also wrote a book called "The Art of War" about military science.
